How to update my iPad 4?!

Ok so whenever I go for software update it just keeps loading saying " checking for update" idk if you guys understand what I mean but my sister had the same problem and what she did was delete all of her apps and games and most of her photos I don't know if I should do what she did BUT any other solution? And about the picture just ignore the square that has all the options in it just have a look at what behind it I mean I wanted to update this iPad a long time ago but it keeps loading and loading, how can I deal with it?
