Why are people so consumed by technology?

I'm a frequent flyer. And the other day I was traveling I noticed pretty much everyone around me waiting at my gate was glued to their phones. I would check mine occasionally however, I was more interested in seeing what is going on around me. This was the same case when I got on my plane. I sat in the middle seat and the man next to me sitting at the window was on his ipad the entire time from when he got on the plane to when he got off the plane. I really just don't understand why people are so consumed by electronics these days. Call me old fashioned and what not, but this is really how I feel. I also see this at my University, too. Everyone seemingly has their eyes glued to their phones.

Should I buy a smart phone?

I'm 22 years old and never owned a smart phone before, just dumb phones. I do have an iPad so don't think I've lived a dinosaur life. But I'm wondering if it's worth it. Now that I've graduated college and can afford a smart phone I'm finally thinking of buying one but I hear so much bad things about how they can cause cancer and how smarts phones do nothing but distract people.

Why does Facebook show that someone is online when there really not?

Because people have told me that they thought I was ignoring them on Facebook when they would message me and it would literally show that I was online for 24 hours. I sometimes use Facebook on my iphone, ipad and sometimes my laptop too. It will also show that someone is online and they are not.

What's the longest time you've actively used an Apple product?

By actively using, I mean you still use now.

I still use my iPad v2, been using it for 5 and a half years.

I'm not asking this question so people can brag about what they have. Just a question on long you've been actively using an Apple product, seeing Apple products get upgraded all the time.
