Should I bother buying an old MacBook or just buy a new iPad?

I m starting college in the spring and I need a new computer or an iPad. My high school provided us with an iPad 2 and I used that to write my papers, etc. With the help of google docs. I only have $200 saved up so far but my budget is about $400. I need it to last me at least 2-3 years. I will use it for Spotify, Netflix, google docs or Microsoft word for papers and presentations, and that s really it. I checked Mac of all trades and was considering a 2008 or 2010 model. I have no interest in a PC because I ve always had a PC and they ve been nothing but problems and I refuse to buy another one. Is the MacBook worth it or would I be better off with an iPad? Also, I m not very knowledgeable about laptops so if you start talking about ram,etc I will have no idea what you re talking about
