Internet/wifi apartment help?

so ever since iv moved into my apartment my internet is super slow compared to what it was when i lived with my parents. Im paying comcast $60 for 75mbps and have a modem form then and a netgear router attached (whats the difference between a modem and router?). I did some research and found out that there is a lot of channel interference in apartments so, how do i fix that? My router is set to channel 1 yet its slower then my modem. Should i connect a ethernet cord directly to my ps4 to fix the problem? Should i buy a new modem/router? Is paying for 75mbps to much for 2 phones, ipad, ps4, and desktop?
