How does the apple msi recognition work? You can't use 3rd party cords for ipad?

I keep having to buy lightning cords. Over time the cords don't get recognized and I have to buy another cord. Supposedly there's a chip in the lightning cord that tells the ipad that its authentic. Will the cord break if I have it plugged into a socket that is controlled by a light switch? Every time I flip on the light switch, power is flowing to the adapter and lightning cord.
Added (1). I'm not sure if that is bad for the charger and cord.
